S22 Top Improvements

December 03, 2021

Three more months and people around the world will be able to enjoy the latest flagship phone series by Samsung – the S22 series - with S22, S22 Plus, and S22 Ultra will hit the market in January 2022. Are there reasons to be excited about this news? Well, according to current official news and rumors, there will be plenty to be excited about! The S22 series is tipped to hit the top of the list of the best smartphones in the world.

Here are some of the current leaks and rumors about the series that can be found circulating the internet, and we'll take a look at how these features compare to the previous S21 series.

Specs

Central Processing Unit

Let's start with the most expected upgrades – the processing power.

The S21 series has had the Snapdragon 888 and Exynos 2100 chipsets that have proven to be quite worthy of being in flagship phones. This time, Samsung will hit us with, of course, newer versions of these chipsets, with Snapdragon 895 and Exynos 2200 available for the US/China and the rest of the world respectively.

Naturally, these new and improved CPUs will bring more power/speed to these phones and there is not much more to be said about that.

Graphics Processing Unit

What should be said more about is the graphics department with a huge improvement expected to happen. According to various sources, the S22 series will go from ARM graphics to the much more famous AMD and its RDNA technology. Why this is incredibly exciting is because AMD’s RDNA technology can be found on top gaming consoles (Sony PlayStation 5 and Xbox X), so we can expect fantastic performances in terms of gaming and general graphics quality.

The main hype will be around Ray-tracing compatibility, a feature that many gamers like to see on their screens while gaming. The Ray-tracing tech simulates real-life light reflections on the screen, making the gaming experience much more exciting and fun. To be fair, there aren't many games for mobile phones with ray-tracing features available at the moment, but this will soon change (hopefully) since there will be the possibility for such features soon.

RAM

Only rumors surround this aspect but we can surely expect at least 8GB of RAM for the regular S22 phone, and at least 16 GB for the S22 Ultra, while S22 Plus will probably have something between, like 12 GB. All three options are amazing!

Screens

All three models are expected to have amazing UHD+ screens that will have a refresh rate of 120Hz. This means that the image quality will go up to 4K (8K possibly for S22 Ultra), which will have smooth frame transitions. Gaming, movies, videos, pictures, or simply watching live wallpapers will look astonishing.

All three screens will be smaller than the predecessors – the regular S22 will have a 6.06-inch screen, S22 Plus 6.2-inch screen, and S22 Ultra 6.8-inch. Whether smaller screens are an improvement or not depends entirely on your taste, but having smaller phones that will fit out pockets better is certainly a plus. Not to mention how much people with smaller hands will enjoy this news.

Battery

Smaller phones mean smaller batteries. It is expected that the S22 will have a batter of around 3,700 mAh, the S22 Plus around 4,370 mAh battery, and the S22 Ultra around 4,855 mAh, according to their serial numbers. These numbers are definitely a downgrade in comparison with the S21 series, but as the screens will be smaller, the battery usage will be smaller as well. Even if the batteries will last a few minutes less, is that worth slimmer and smaller phones? Many will say – yes.

Cameras

Another exciting collaboration comes with the well-known Olympus, a company that has been producing top cameras for many years. Apparently, Olympus will be in charge of the new optical stabilization system that will improve recordings and taking photos while on move.

When it comes to sensor quality, we can expect a monstrous 200-megapixel camera on the S22 Ultra, which is almost twice as much as the previous S21 Ultra model! All four camera sensors will be improved on all three S22 models in comparison with the S21 series, which is quite amazing but not unexpected, as many mid-range companies have put fantastic sensors into their phones.

This will allow 8K recordings in 60 fps, which is also an improvement from the maximum 24 fps that the S21 had.

Design

Well, it has already been said that phone dimensions will be smaller, which many find to be a piece of good news. But when it comes to the general design, it is rumored that the S22 phones will look much more like the Note series than the previous S21 series. It is not official yet as we have seen just rendered images which may or may not be true. But, as many people prefer the Note looks over the S series, this is arguably an improvement.

The front camera is rumored to be "hidden" behind the display, which means there will be no notch on top of the phone. This has already been achieved with the Z Fold 3 model and a similar feature may come with the S22. The problem is that the Z Fold 3 had camera quality problems due to this feature and it is still uncertain whether Samsung has fixed this problem or not. If they have, the camera will be hidden, which is amazing.

On the back of the phone, we will have a simple Samsung logo in the middle, while the rear (main) camera system will have a P-shape (three sensors in a row from top to bottom with another one on the side). This is more or less a done deal, even though many have expected a square shape (2+2). We can't say for sure whether this is an improvement as the phone is not out yet so we can't judge upfront.

Final words

Of course, many of the OS supporting features will be known after the presentation but we can expect the 5G network support, which has become a standard now. Either way, as this looks to be a completely new monster of phone series, a lot of cool features will likely be present.

All in all, the hype is real and January 2022 can’t come soon enough!
